About Mental Health Foundations for Carers

Mental Health Foundations for Carers program is designed to assist carers looking after someone with a mental illness. This resource sets out some of the issues carers may face and the type of support they may need. The resource also provides practical tips for carers on how to navigate the mental health system, how to look after themselves and effective communication techniques.

The program aims to help carers:

  • recognise that what they are going through as a carer is normal
  • see the bigger picture by exploring the six phases of caring
  • understand that other carers may be on the same journey
  • feel they are not alone
  • reach a place of purposeful coping
  • identify key resources and practical assistance that can help.
